tuba harness

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has used a harness set up that allowed the left hand to be free to still get at the slides. I see a meinl weston tuba harness on the brasswind web site, has anyone has luck with this on a tuba without the clip rings? Need to play standing up for about 90 minutes at a time. I use a shotgun strap with d ring brackets on my yamaha yfb-621. It has served me well so far. I've never played a 90 minute gig like you mentioned, but I don't think it would be a problem.

I have a M-W harness but as you noticed, it needs attachments on the horn to work. I remember seeing some posts on the 'old' TubeNet about a harness call a 'Blue Note Strap'. I think it will work without attachment points. It's also a lot cheaper than the M-W harness. (Addition:) The Tuba Exchange sells the Blue Note Strap. Call them at 1(800)869-TUBA

A standard geetar strap does me fine

Let me clarify, I will gladly spend the money for the MW harness, I just want to know if anyone has used it with a tuba lacking the harness clips with any success or what they did to the tuba to use the harness more effectively. Also, if anyone has heard of or seen a different harness set up from somewhere else. And Gary, no offense taken.

Are there any really big guys out there who have tried the meinl weston tuba harness? Can they easily be adapted larger for tuba players who are built more like John Goodman or your average offensive lineman than Brad Pitt? I would gladly spend the money on one if it looks like I can use it but I am far from being average size.

I would use the BG straps. They come in an assortment of sizes, handling anything from a 3/4 to a 6/4. They have a heavy twine on each end that you can place on the horn without scratching the finish and about a 3 1/2" wide strap the helps spread out the weight of the horn. I've used starps in the past on my 186 but did not use the factory clasps for mounting the strap - there were better ways to sling it that kept in in a better playing position.

Just my observations.

I don't know how large you are but at my 250 pounds 52 inch chest, the Meinl-Weston harness works very nicely. I don't even have all the straps out all the way.
