National Emblem is a fun march for tubas, if only for the beginning of the trio, but it was written by E. E. Bagley.

My favorite Sousa march is The Liberty Bell. I would be interested in knowing how Monty Python ended up with a Sousa march as their theme song though.

OK - for the first time this thread - a flame:

WHAT? Pride of the Wolverines? I just played it last night and could not help thinking what a snooooozer it was. Just a bunch of quotes from his other marches.

Sorry for the small rant.

I must keep reminding myself of what my mother used to say: "Son, everybody has a right to have their own opinion." That was usually followed by a whipping and cigarette burns.

Here's a good link for the "Library of Congress March" by the Marine Band.

This next link gives some background on that march, finished by Stephan Bulla under the encouragement of Maestro Loras Schissel (known authority on Sousa marches).

Loras Schissel will be our guest conductor at this Tuesday's concert in City Place West Palm Beach, and then at our next concert 2 weeks later. We've heard that he is a Sousa expert. Should be a good experience.

Hands down favorite is the Freelance march. It joins El Crapitan as a march that was compiled from themes of an operatta that Sousa wrote, and also changes time signatures from triple to duple at the trio, giving it a good kick in the pants. Freelance works best at a quicker tempo, say quarter note = 144.

George Washington Bicentenial is a good one, too.
