Can you recommend a gig bag for an old miraphone 186?

Post by kprinz »

I have an older miraphone 186 with a 16.5 inch bell. I bought a protec gig back to get by when my other gig bag fell apart, but it swallows the instrument and is way too bulky to carry around (especially when carrying two tubas).

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive gig bag that is a better fit for my specific instrument. One bag I'm considering is the Medium Sized Miraphone Deluxe Bag. Does anyone have any experience with these? How is the fit with a Miraphone 186? Do you have any other suggestions? I'm looking to spend around $300

Thanks in advance.

Altieri bags are great, I've had a couple… but the newer Miraphone brand ones are sweet. They are still making the 186 (or just 86) so those should fit fine. The newer model bell is a tad larger, but it's only an inch or so I think. The body is basically the same as the older horn.

I've got a new Miraphone bag for my vintage 186, and it fits very well

The only thing with the Miraphone bags is that they are top-loaders, which I do not like. As to the Pro-Tec bags, they are decent and inexpensive bags and will do nicely if you carry an 18"X 2" round foam cushion in the bag against the bell. This takes up just the right amount of space, gives extra protection for the bell, plus it gives you a very nice padded seat wherever you go!

My son's school plays 1970s Miraphone 186 at school. He uses a Humes & Berg standard size "Tuxedo" bag to move it from home to school and back again. It fits very nicely in the case. He has had it for 6 months and it is holding up well. The zippers are well constructed. We have some minor problems with the outside pocket zipper. The backpack straps work well. You just have to be careful which side you place the levers. It has withstood abuse the a teen boy would give it.
