Just wanted to add more to a long list of compliments about Lee Stofer.
I had the opportunity to meet him this past weekend and have some repair work done on my horn. He was very accommodating to my schedule (I was arriving on Friday afternoon and leaving Saturday night) and was a joy to talk to. Not only did he do absolutely fantastic work on my horn (I've never felt pistons this nice before) but he also had a wealth of knowledge to share on a variety of topics in the tuba world. I got a chance to see some of his work (including Jim Self's GORGEOUS York), play test some tubas and mouthpieces that he had for sale, and learn a lot about the instrument. I also got to see him in action as he finished up work on my horn and he was as meticulous and knowledgeable as the finest surgeons.
I went in with a problem with a problem in my valve guide channels: the guides were wearing VERY quickly (as little as a month in some instances) on a horn that's less than two years old. He not only repaired this problem but also realigned the valves, did a chem clean, replaced all the corks and felts, lubed and polished... all at a very reasonable price. He also got me set up with a number of Hetman's lubricants (which I had not used before).
Overall, his craftsmanship, hospitality, and agreeable personality make him one of the only people I would trust to do work on my horn. If you're ever in need of repairs and Atlanta is less than 20 (or 30, or 40) hours away.. Go see him!
