Debate - cordura or leather case?

Is your tuba silver plated, bare brass or lacquered brass? Leather will turn silver black due to the tannic acid or chromium salts used to tan leather (though Bloke's brain tanned deer hide might not have that issue, ha ha). Don't know what it will do to bare brass but it probably won't be good. Cronkhite bags are excellent, I have a cordura one. I went through the same decision process but am glad I picked cordura since it carries a bare brass horn. The advantages and disadvantages others point out for leather sound accurate but the cordura has been durable and protects the horn very well.

This case is for a silver PT-6 and I think I'm edging towards the cordura after all, considering that the leather might be bad for it. *However*... I know I will be getting dogs in the future, so the leather is still tempting, but maybe not enough for the price.

Is this black you speak of just tarnish? Because that's just the nature of the beast - I have to polish it occasionally since it tarnishes because it's ... well ... silver. And it does that without a leather case instigating it. Or even without looking at it sideways, really.

Since I'm an Idaho girl, maybe this could be a cheap, feasible alternative! With teeth and antler bits as "bling".

Unless all of your furniture and clothing are also leather, the "dog fur" advantage of leather will be negligible.

As I've been shamed into getting a leather bag for my small (again, I just don't have the ambition to earn enough money for a "big") tuba, I've put the little woman on the task of pulling her bow and arrows out of the teepee and shooting a nice size deer, skinning it, tanning it with the brains (as she - being from The South - is part Injun), and lashing sections of it together (with drawn deer gut) for me. When - perhaps someday (??) - I make it to the *Big City with my small deerskin tuba bag, the know-better Yankees can laugh if they want to, but we Southerners are proud...and just too damned ignorant to be shamed by those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Besides, as we have chemical waste and untreated sewage flowing in the ditches along the sides of our dirt roads, the carcinogen, bacterial, and viral particulates in the air down here are pretty tough on anything other than brain-tanned deer hides.

I briefly had a leather case, that was included in a sale. The leather was a bit dry and cracked, but I don't think it was really cared for well. The bigger concern was that the padding had deteriorated due to old age (which is to be expected).
