Kanstul 66s EEb in Quintet?
Is anybody out there playing a 66s in quintet, solo and other settings? Is it too big for quintet? The tuba is only 31 inches high but the bell seems like overkill. I love the timbre and am considering buying one.

Re: Kanstul 66s EEb in Quintet?
Here's another way to look at it. Take a look at the specs on a Besson 981. Classic quintet horn. The Besson has a slightly larger bore than the Kanstul up to the 4-th valve (where the Kanstul is only .008" larger) and the bell is the same size.
So just on paper, I don't think I'd worry specifically about the bore size or the bell. And I wouldn't think the fact that the Kanstul is non-compensating would render it unsuitable for quintet.
If it's overkill, then the 981 should be overkill -- and it's not.

Thanks, I am familiar with the Bessons and would choose a 983 given the choice. The Kanstul is non-compensating but has 5 valves. My inquiry is specific to the 66s.

I've played the 66s 5v in brass quintet quite a bit. It works well with a big sound for an Eb while being very nimble. If you would like to talk in detail send me a pm.
