Bill Barber, What Kind Of Tuba?

Post by hbcrandy »

Below, is a link to the Sauter Finegan Band playing, "Midnight Sleighride", a jazz take-off of the "Troika" from Prokofiev's, "Leutenant Kije Suite" with Bill Barber on tuba. For the Miles Davis recordings, Barber played a King, rotary valved, CC tuba. The tuba in this video is not a King CC. It looks somewhat like a Cerveny Piggy but has a side-shot main tuning slide rather than the Piggy vertical tuning slide. Does anyone know, or have a good guess what Bill is playng?

This is from Jonathan Dorn's Tuba Fan Page. Jonathan has the player listed as Bill Barber. Though, the little I can see the face of the tuba player in the video, I cannot be sure it is Bill Barber. I do not know the Jay of whom you speak?

It doesn't look like LB Oliver's Martin CC.

Mark:

After seeing Jay McAlister on the Chamber Brass album cover, I think you are correct that Jay is playing in the Sauter Finnegan video. That is the tuba.
