Mirafone (Miraphone) Firebird 5 or 6 valves?

Post by tylerferris1213 »

Hi all,

I have play tested both the 5 and the 6 valve models of firebird. It's always been in an elephant room, though, so I can't tell how different these two horns play from each other.

Is there a big difference between the models? Is the 6 valved one a little more stuffy? Do you need a 6th valve on one of these? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

More valves doesn't make for better "Timbre" - just more options for tuning.

Ask a natural horn player how many valves there "should" be.

I've NEVER played a Firebird that needed 6 valves. Only Alexanders need that many. posting.php?mode=reply&f=2&t=61799#" target="_blank
sorry, I don't do signatures.

I, and some other tuba players I know, have a theory that 6-valve rotary F tubas have a better low C and neighboring notes than their five valve sisters.

I'm one of those players that thinks 6 valves tend to produce a more centered and stable low register on German rotary F tubas. Not to say there's not exceptions out there or that 6 valves are "necessary", but ALL of the German rotary F tubas I've played that I'd want to own have had 6 valves, and that's when I've been able to compare the same models with both 5 and 6 valves side by side. I'm not sure that there's a marked difference in sound, but to my weak and shaky chops, 6 valves seems better in the low end.

Your mileage may vary,

Good input, everyone. More valves is better for intonation, but I wasn't sure if this model would get a more stuffed up sound as a result.

I've test played two of the 6-valved. They were not stuffy.

That's great to know. I couldn't tell when I played because of the other people playing.

The Firebird I own is my personal favorite of all I've played and it's a 5 valver. I absolutely believe everyone else on here, but I can tell you mine never hurt for the lack of tuning possibilities of the 6th valve.

By the by, if you're in the market, I have one for sale right now.....
