I accept the irony.

But then I also have worked in a very remote place, where one had to get by with the limited locally available ressources. Which were mostly directed towards maintaining fishing boats.

Klaus... this fix addresses a concern I've had with some of the crappy wheeled cases. By placing the wheels farther outboard... it makes a case much easier to be pushed or pulled without 'wobbling'.

Ohio Travel Bag carries just about every wheel for any bag or case. They have an online catalog to search if you want. I have bought stuff from them before, good service and very helpful on the phone. Plus they have latches, handles, corner protectors and rivets to put everything back together again.

I wish I could find the picture...

I had a Conn 12J will 4 casters attached to a 1/2" thick piece of plywood (actually one on each half of the case) on the bell end. The instrument was then pushed vertically.

I was amazing on flat ground...No real effort needed to push that tuba around.

As you described... the Unitec case that my Miraphone 1291 rides around in has 5" casters on the bell end. The horn and case has been known to roll away while waiting to be loaded into the Blazer. I had to chase it across the parking lot at the school where we rehearse once!

I've had good luck with casters from these guys => http://www.reliablehardware.com/tiltcasters.aspx" target="_blank

Using a washer on the inside end of the rivet tends to help spread the stress of the caster a bit better.
