Tuba Solo with Middle School Accomp.

Post by Jeff Keller »

Hello,

I've been asked to solo with a local middle school band. I need ideas for an appropriate piece. The solo tuba part generally suffers in the music with this age group in mind. Any old cornet solos with easier accompaniment will due, too.

Thank you!

First two thoughts are Blue Bells of Scotland or Grandfather's Clock -- I don't remember the accompaniments being too difficult, but it's been a long time since I've had direct middle school band experience. I'd think that any piece that has variations on a tune usually has an accompaniment that is not too difficult and stays out of the way. Plus there are plenty of high notes, fast notes, farty noises, etc. that middle school kids will love. :tuba:

There's an arrangement of Flight of the Bumblebee that would work. I don't remember the arranger, but the solo parts are possible for clarinet, sax, flute, trumpet, mallet percussion, or Euphonium. The the non-solo parts are extremely easy. I think you can find it on jwpepper or stantons.

As for the part, you can either read it in octave (goes up to Bb4, aka Bb above Bydlo G#/RVW Ab) or read it down the octave. I played it down since I wasn't quite ready to go that high on my lil BBb tuba in high school.

How about Leroy Anderson's, "Trumpeter's Lullaby" but on a really big trumpet?

I've conducted and performed Art Dedrick's, A Touch of Tuba, with middle school bands. It's a pleasant piece with a bit of jazz and it's only 5 min. or so long. Kendor publishes it.

Depending on the band, this rag time tuba solo "Les Beevers Rag" might be appropriate:
