Somebody once told, here on TubeNet, how he inspired his daughter to move around her oboe, especially downwards. Maybe you should take his advice.
The scales that radically differ from the fingering patterns on your F and CC basses, not just the actual fingerings, are A major starting three ledger lines below the bass stave and then descending chromatically down to Eb. You may continue down to the next lower A, but by Eb you should have gotten the idea.
Your playing by ear is about intuitively moving around within scales with well know fingerings. If the scale fingerings are not well established, your intuition has no systemized foundation to work on. You may per ideology want to limit yourself to practicing parts, but there is no escape around knowing the scales.
We now will see a string of postings from the geniuses telling: I never knew any scales, and I can play every tune by ear.
They will be lying. They actually know the scales of the one or two keys in which they always play.
