NWRTEC report, please!

Post by Norm in Bellevue »

For those of us who couldn't make it to Pullman for the weekend, it would be nice if someone who did could post the competition results and a synopsis of the weekend's activities.

Thanks in advance.

Stephen Abeshima from the University of Puget Sound won the 20 and under euphonium solo competition.

Clayton Dungey won the 20 and under tuba solo competition.

I also heard that the CWU quartet won the chamber competition.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

Joe Ready won the Artist Tuba, and Beserat Tafesse won Artist Euphonium.

Everyone played beautifully this weekend, and it was really fantastic to hear all of the talent in the Pacific Northwest. A huge thanks to Ben Kirby and Chris Dickey for all their hard work. Everything ran really smoothly, with informative and interesting clinics all weekend. I can't wait for the next one!

I read that Chris Olka performed a recital entirely on contrabass tuba.

What pieces did he play?

Are this and any other performances from the conference available online?

Steve, it took me a minute to realize you'd resurrected an old NWRTEC thread!

Yes, Chris Olka schooled us on big tuba in his recital Saturday. Not only was his playing clean and nimble, but he approached all of it with a supreme sense of musicality. Really inspiring. Rep was:

Beethoven - Variations on "Judas Maccabaeus"
Lebedev - Concerto in One Movement
Hindemith Sonata
Bach Cello Suite No. 1 - Allemande, Menuet I & II, Sarabande, Courante
Händel - Aria con Variazioni, "The Harmonious Blacksmith"

Can't say enough great things about hosts Bill Winkle & Sarah Paradis; it was a very fine and well run conference. Boise's a hip town, as well!
