Will a tuba/euph player ever take home a Grammy? (With Poll)

Post by Watchman »

What do you think the chances are that in our lifetimes we will see a tuba or euphonium player win a Grammy in the category "Best Classical Instrumental Solo"?

Some unusual things have won this before, so why not?

Anyone can apply to be a voting member of the Grammy Awards (yes, that means you, too, can decide that Beyonce should win "Best Surround Album" vs. Mahler 2 with the Philharmonia Orchestra  ). There have been symphony orchestras in the past that have "stuffed the ballot box" by signing up the entire orchestra, chorus, and staff as voting members for the purpose of voting for their own recordings.

So...with enough campaigning and enough voting members signed up for you, and it actually isn't that far-fetched to think that a tuba or euphonium player could win. It's actually possible, however "theoretical" it might seem.

Point being that the Grammy's aren't at all about being the "best" as decided by some secret group of true experts. It's all a political fashion show. Don't put too much stock in it.

Anyone active in the recording industry will most likely be a member of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences ) and thus eligible to vote for Grammy winners. All it costs is membership dues.

Uncle "used to be in NARAS, but didn't want to encourage most of current 'music scene' by voting for it" Beer

Maybe not, but a tuba player has already won a Tony...
