My new YEP-321 has some intonation issues:
-F (open 6th partial) is about 20 cents sharp
-Bb (open 2nd partial) is about 12 cents sharp
(In comparison to open 3rd (F), 4th (Bb) and 5th (D) partials.)
Is this normal for a YEP-321? Did I get a "bad" horn? I still have the option to return the horn....
Regards,
Bob
Is F out of tune on your YEP-321?

F is usually sharp, but not that sharp. What mpc are you using? Could be a different mpc may help.
On the Bb, do you mean your tuning note? If so, pull the main slide some more.

I'm using a Yamaha 51D mouthpiece. Tonight I'll test with the 48 that came with the horn. Perhaps I'll buy and try a SM4-baritone.
If I adjust the main slide for middle Bb, the D above it, the F below it, and nearly all of the other notes will be in tune. The problem notes are the F above middle Bb and Bb an octave down.
Last night at rehearsal I quickly figured out that I should tune about 5 cents flat, that gets the low Bb acceptable. The F was still unacceptable, I can lip it down, but its a lot of work, the tone suffers, and I'm on the verge of loosing the note. I found playing the F with the 4th valve works, the tone changes, but its in tune.
My old Buescher 3 valve horn has better intonation for the open notes. I had to pull and push the 3rd slide depending on which lower note I was playing, but never had to mess with the higher notes.
