Tuba Bike Cargo Trailer!

Post by ursatz »

For years I have been searching for a way to bike my tuba to rehearsal. I have B.O.B. which works great for violins, clarinets, trumpets, and even trombones -- but not my tubas.

Then THIS comes along! The Wandertec Tuba Bike Cargo Trailer!

Alas... I am still searching for a way to bike my tuba to rehearsal....

21 inches wide load capacity? Seems kind of tight to me. It looks a lot like the common bicycle trailer that's normally used to haul kids (!?), but with everything stripped off the frame.

I made a bicycle trailer some years back, and got quite a bit of use out of it. The frame was ABS pipe - the black stuff used in my area for waste plumbing, maybe 1½ inch, with various fittings. It was actually fairly elaborate, made good use of "tee wye" fittings among others. This stuff is easy to work with (but work fast while gluing), and has decent strength (but don't leave it out in the sun year-round.) I built up some 27 inch wheels with plain radial spoking pattern, and cut drop-outs in pine boards mounted on lower frame cross members. Look at that cargo trailer, with its 20" wheels, and scale it up to look about the same with 27" wheels - i.e., bigger. And the frame rectangle was higher up, just a couple inches below the tops of the wheels, so the trailer's "tongue" could pass over the bicycle's rear wheel & back rack and attach to the seatpost.

Wish I had pictures. The only thing I really failed to carry in that thing was some 4x8 plywood sheets. I thought I could sort of stand them on edge and make them lean on each other, but of course they wouldn't stay (luckily it was a short haul and I just walked the trailer home while holding the load in place, so I suppose technically it worked.) I carried my rather large tuba, sousaphone, string bass ... You need to take into account how wide you are, I don't recall hitting a lot of parked cars but it would be easy to do.

I have considered getting something like one of these for hauling stuff. They are surprisingly common where I live...
