Tuba Trios???

Post by thetubawizard »

One of my students asked if I had the 12 Canons for Low brass book a few days ago. Not having it, I decided to look into it and noticed that this was the first real low brass trio book I've come across. I have been looking all over for some tuba/euphonium trios and cannot find any (other than a few on Lowbrassmusic but those were iffy to me)!!! Is there really none out there or do most people just use trombone trios?

Let me specify that I'm speaking strictly about trios with just tuba and euphonium.

You can find titles tuba trios in the tuba repertoire book. I'd look there first and then order them from the publisher listed

We have a trio list on the Hickey's Website at http://www.hickeys.com/cgi/display.cgi?page=tue3.htm
You can further refine using "TTT" as a search term.

Ludus by V. Nelhybel is an amazing piece.
My opinion for what it's worth...

Get the Reiche Horn Trios and just read them in bass cleff. They are great. There are two volumes - one with 6 trios and the other with 8 trios.

Walter Ross's Fancy Dances is a great piece and he has a web sight were you can download it for free.
He and his family are very generous.

Beethoven Opus 87 originally for 2 oboes & English horn.

The introduction lists a number of versions involving conical low brasses.

Bugler's holiday. If your tuba players can double-tongue, it's a hit.

They are good. The only problem is when the low part goes into written bass clef, thus screwing up the transposition. If you can get horn players to read in C (which they hate) these also work well with 2 horns and tuba.

Alec Wilder also wrote a set of challenging trios for tuba.
