There are those who know the technicalities and will be able to help you I am sure.

I've done some very practical things to encourage at least one tuba player who is going in this direction, for the good of the cause. But even while doing so, I've wondered why someone plays the tuba if he or she wants it to sound like something other than a tuba?

I like the sound of the tuba, so these sorts of recordings in which the point seems to be that the tuba can sound like a synthesizer or like an electric guitar leave me mystified. If I wanted to sound like that, I'd play one of those instruments.

What am I missing?

The "quack" sound is achieved with an envelope filter/follower, also sometimes called "auto wha", usually in the low pass function.
