Red Lehr Discography

Post by Tubadork »

Anyone know how many albums he is on? I have NO IDEA, but I do have the CD's that Windsong has for sale (8 or 9 of 'em), but they have all been recorded recently. Did Red record at all before then? I've check a few places (Amazon, Tap etc..) but I can't find anything.
Cool,
any info would be cool,
Bill

This is a great question.

When Red and the gang played at the Army show, I arranged to sell their CDs as a favor to them. Went through two cases in a flash with promises for to get more. When I got home, I discovered that there was no place to get them on the net. Well, there is now. I put a few sound clips out there which somehow contain some of Red's licks - don't know how that happenned! Seems they were just happy selling these CDs at gigs and never made them available. Who knows about the pre-CD days? What did Red record then?

Anyway, take a listen to Red at www.windsongpress.com , there is a link on the front page.

I'm also interested in the answer to this. Also, as I have no "Red" CD's and want to buy them, I'm wondering if anybody would like to suggest their favorite CD's featuring Red. I figure buying 2 or 3 at a time is about as much as my ears/mind can take. Thanks for your sugestions.
Peace. ASG

There are a number of Red's recordings (maybe 12 or 15) which pre-date those now available on CD. There are quite a few which were only on LP and/or cassette.

I first met Red in '83, and was fortunate enough to have business trips which took me to St. Louis that year and the next. In addition to ending every free night at the Robert E. Lee Showboat where Red played, I used to go through used record stores for recordings of both Red and Singleton Palmer which were, even then, no longer available new.

I'll post titles of those older recordings later this week.

Came across a Singleton Palmer LP 30 years ago at college in the 50 cent record bin at the college book store. He fronted the band and they were excellent - great music. Always wanted to hear more - looking forward to your list - anybody know if any of his stuff is on cd?

Wish I had been able to hear him live. Saw Red Lehr couple years ago in Alsip, IL and they were great and really nice guys. You know a guy is good when Gene Porkorney comes from a gig to listen!

I bought a couple of Red's records at the First National Tuba-Euphonium Symposium at the University of Illinois in May 1975. At that time he had a Besson sousaphone.

Just found this post, and if anyone is interested in a list of Red's CD's let me know, I have access to most of them. I also have a copy of the 2006 recital at the Tuba/Euphonium with the United States Army Band, with Red and the Jazz Incredibles , (Jean Kittrell and the great John Becker) .

The problem is that most of those recordings are fundamentally illegal, since they didn't pay mechanical rights for them. Thus, the limited distribution.

As to the CDs, you might try this web site, I'm pretty sure that they have what is available.
