Low Brass Bash

Jan 19 2016 - 7:30pm
Location:
Max Noah Recital Hall
Georgia College’s Department of Music hosts guest artists Demondrae Thurman, euphonium and Joanna Hersey, tuba on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in Max Noah Recital Hall.

This concert will include the music of John Stevens, Barbara York and others. Faculty members Kaju Lee, piano; Maureen Horgan, euphonium and Bill Pritchard, tuba will also be featured, along with the GC student Tuba Quartet.

“The euphonium and tuba are not normally thought of as solo instruments, but these guest artists will convince you otherwise,” said Dr. Maureen Horgan, music professor. “This will be the second time that Demondrae has impressed our students and community and we are delighted to welcome Joanna, one of the top female tuba players in the world.”

Demondrae Thurman has an international reputation as a euphonium soloist having performed in Europe, Asia and throughout North America. He is a miraphone artist and associate professor of music at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, where he teaches low brass, directs the wind ensemble and serves as director of graduate studies. Thurman plays with the Brass Band of Battle Creek and his Sotto Voce Quartet has won awards and appeared multiple times on American Public Media’s "Performance Today." Demondrae has three solo recordings and can also be heard on recordings with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Battle Creek and the New South Jazz Orchestra.

Joanna Ross Hersey is principal tubist with the Carolina Philharmonic, a Yamaha Performing Artist and associate professor of tuba and euphonium at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Former tubist with the United States Coast Guard Band, Joanna appeared on "The Today Show" and "Good Morning America" and has performed with artists including Placido Domingo, Roberta Flack, Marilyn Horne, Arlo Guthrie, Michael Bolton, Lee Greenwood, Arturo Sandoval and Jack Nicholson. Her solo albums, "O quam mirabilis" and "Zigzags," are available from joannahersey.com.

A $10 donation for the concert will benefit music scholarships and the music department through the GCSU Foundation, Inc. Students can get in free with a Bobcat ID.
