Euphonium Countermelodies & Cool March Licks

Post by Kevin Miller »

Just for my own edification and for my euphonium students, I am interested in compiling a collection of great euphonium countermelodies.

Some are quite obvious and some not. I would like to get a list of well known and more obscure countermelodies and cool licks from marches and the like. List your favorites and reasons why. Maybe you could relate funny anecdotes related to performing these parts and why you like playing them.

I'm counting on you old farts out there for some info on old, long forgotten tunes!

Traditional marches only. No football or pop tunes please.

"Sons of the Veterans" another march by King.

"Anchors Away" by Miles/Zimmermann

We just played these two at our concert this past Saturday. The counter melody in the Trio of "Anchors Away" is so good the conductor wanted us to play it louder than the marked p the first time.

LV wrote:"p"? That does mean "powerfully", right?
I think you're right. And pp means = "pound profusely"?

Check interlibrary resources for 'Heritage of the March' (old Bob Hoe recordings) for the LP entitled "Youffer's Nightmare".

"Colonel Bogey March" by Kenneth J. Alford.

Not only has a good counter melody, but has 3 euph parts in certain portions.

The Hogan's Heroes March by Jerry Fielding has a nice countermelody that I remember playing when I was in high school.

Graf Zeppelin (The Conqueror) by Carl Tieke. The euphs have featured parts in both the 2nd and 3rd strains (both melody and countermelody lines).

Karl King was himself a eupher and wrote some great euph parts. Melody Shop and Ragged Rozie come to mind.

And yes I'm an old fart, I once played a concert under Karl Kings direction.
