Question for schlipf mute owners

I know there is a difference between a practice mute and performance mute but....


Has anyone brought these to use on gigs?

I've used mine as a concert mute in a pinch. Nothing like showing up to an out of town gig and sight reading the music only to find out you needed to bring a mute.

My schlipf mute has horrible intonation in my tuba...awful. I ended up playing G at the top of the staff first valve by itself (on a 6/4 CC tuba). It was "muted" and in tune so that's all that matters, I suppose. Had I known that I needed a mute for that gig, I would have brought a concert mute in addition to the schlipf.

Mine doesn't alter the tuning at all, but I would say it's far too quiet to be a gigging mute.

I have a Schlipf practice mute for my Alexander. I bought it so that I could play in my center-of-the-building condo, but I moved almost 7 years ago now and haven't used it since

I wouldn't suggest using it as a performance mute. The intonation is ok, but it seems far too quiet to be of any real use as a performance mute. I have a Balu mute for when I need a "real" mute, but rarely use that one either.
