Re: Rotor valve clicking
this is a school horn. how should i tell my director to fix itbloke wrote:Based on the particular model, one of these two things is probably the culprit.
less likely:
- The rotor is clean inside, but the back bearing plate needs to be driven home - as vertical play is causing the noise.
more likely:
- The donut-shaped elevated bearing surfaces inside the casing have a combination of lime/schmutz deposits, which have barely pushed the back bearing out. The rotor and bearing plate need to be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled...and the bearing plating then needs to be driven home to remove any vertical play - as vertical play is causing the noise.

Hmmmm....
If he's capable of fixing stuff, have him read what bloke wrote (he knows of what he speaks).
If he's not capable of fixing things, ask him if you can bring it to the repair shop that does routine maintenance on your school's instruments (which, basically, is what this is) at the district's expense.
Please forgive me for asking, but how do you expect to tackle a B flat to C conversion of a tuba, if you don't know how to perform routine maintenance/cleaning of a rotor valve? Just curious, that's all.....

Re: Rotor valve clicking
Another likely culprit with which I have recent experience is the stop plate, which holds the rubber stops and is fastened to the front of the rotor casing with two screws. If those screws are loose, clatter results. I dripped a lot of oil into various places before realizing what was making the noise.
Other possibilities include play in the linkages.

Re: Rotor valve clicking
One more possibility is the part where the linkage attaches to the spindle. It's supposed to be a friction fit atop the spindle, but doesn't fit tightly on some tubas, causing a metallic clacking sound when moved.
