In Memorian: Robert Nagel

Post by weops »

I just learned of the passing of Robert Nagel - composer, arranger, teacher and Trumpet virtuoso. You can look up his remarkable career; but suffice it to say - if you have ever played or enjoyed brass chamber music - you are in his debt. As founder of the New York Brass Quintet in the early 1950's he was a true pioneer. He taught extensively in addition to performing, composing and arranging. I was fortunate to study chamber with him for two consecutive summers in the early 1980's. He (along with his NYBQ colleagues Allan Dean, Paul Ingraham, John Swallow and Toby Hanks) was a true inspiration.

I happened to hear him practicing late one summer night in a rehearsal studio on the grounds of the Yale Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. He was playing Charlier #2 - It really was Transcendental - I could never forget it. What a unique musician!

Mr. Nagel was a devout Christian and dedicated much of his time and artistry to his faith. God Bless and Rest in Peace.
