There is probably some leverage here:

...possibly more than with the White House. (Though I signed the White House petition as well).

Petitions are great, but imagine if 14000 people contacted their elected officials....

Re: Sign this petition to keep the military from band cuts..
How can they overlook the tremendous amount of positive PR the bands generate not only for the military (and military recruitment) but also for the government. The bands travel to many communities around the country and for many of them it's about the only tangible thing they ever see out of Washington. And if we can't afford the bands then how do they justify all the money for all the ads I see on tv for folks to join the military. And how about the money they spend to do flyovers at sporting events? And I don't mean the actual cost but just to do it. I remember seeing somewhere that the government paid the NFL something like $200,000 to do a flyover at the Superbowl. It never occurred to me that taxpayers were paying the leagues to do flyovers.
I think we need a million sousaphone player protest march on Congress. Even deaf congressmen would have to hear the din of all those sousaphones!

I wish there were specifics about what constitutes a "social function and other events outside the competencies of the military."
If there are abuses, I'd like to know about it.

Re: Sign this petition to keep the military from band cuts..
Some good cews for a change: Austrian government had decided to foolishly cut military band budget.
I personally didn´t consider the fact in itself foolish, but the chosen mode of operation:
Each but ONE Military band had been cut to a 20 piece ensemble rather than shutting down some and deviding the already-too-low budget among the remaining units.
So with rising funds spent on defensein general as well as constant intervention by (civil & amateur) musician´s organisations, government has decided to put the bands back into working order, just about 6 months after the cut had become effective.

Thanks for posting this Alex. This is nothing but a publicity stunt from a politician.
I'm in the Coast Guard Band, and our annual budget is way less than one afternoon training mission for the Blue Angels. Frustrating to say the least.

McSally is up for re-election in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District. If anyone reading this lives there, PLEASE vote her out!
