Eine Faust Overture Cc or F?

Post by TheDancingSousa »

I've got an audition for school coming up where I need to play an excerpt from the Faust Overture, starting on the D in the staff and going down to G# below the staff. I can do it comfortably on either horn, but which is it traditionally played on? I've never run into it before, and I'm curious.

Thanks!

If it is for an audition, then my answer is to play it on the horn that you feel most centered with pitch-wise, and that you play with more ease and fluidity between the intervalic breaks. Basically, which horn are you more reliable on with the excerpt? When I was playing CC and F, that horn was CC on that piece. Now it's BBb. Chances are, the audition panel won't know what key tuba you're playing, but they would be able to determine that you sounded better on one or the other, if one is more comfortable. Good luck.
