Nonstandard duet books

Post by ojannen2 »

I use duets to work with on sightreading with students and I am trying to fill out my collection. I am specifically looking for material for fairly advanced high school students. If I could find duets interesting enough to play with friends, that would be a nice bonus.

I already have most of the standards: Voxman, Amsden, Telemann, Blume, etc.

I am not looking for a specific voicing, clef, or original instruments. Equal parts or parts an octave apart are fine. Treble clef and bass clef are fine. Flute music doesn't quite work for euph/tuba but almost everything else does.

Here are two of my favorites:
Trombone institute of technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeibXzoc24c" target="_blank" target="_blank
Hindemith bassoon and cello duet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbM8WW5TGe0" target="_blank" target="_blank

A friend pointed me to this video of duets written by Derick Kane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snBpWzQxavk" target="_blank" target="_blank. The description says the duets will be published soon but the video is a year old. I can't find them anywhere. Has anyone seen them?

I don't have the opportunity to play duets often, but the two books I have and use are Walter Sear "Advanced Duets for Tuba" (Wiltshire Music), and Tom Ervin "Twenty Counterparts, duet accompaniments to the Bordogni-Rochut" (tom-ervin.com). Both are available at sheet music plus. Both should be within the reach of advanced high schoolers.

Good luck!

I have the Tom Ervin duets. They are great.

Are there other tuba duet books that could work on euphonium?

I found these to be interesting. They are an accompaniment to Blazhevich "70 Studies for BBb Tuba Vol. I"

It is a dissertation and the accompaniments are toward the bottom.

Yet another pitch for the Roger Jones 21 Distinctive Duets, which are not in print but should be.

I know several of us have suggested it to Bryan, and I suspect there USA copyright clearance issue, but they really are perfect for this situation and are more fun to play than the Sear duets (which are fun to play).

I believe these will fit the bill for you perfectly. Two tubas or one tuba and one euph. The horn version is for sale at Hickey's and in Europe. The tuba version has just not had enough exposure to get anywhere. They are quite a bit harder than they look, and will likely give your high school students something to chew on.
