Best-of Lists

Post by MonsterOil »

Just had my glass of Scotch for the night and I started getting curious about you tuba folk. Who do you consider to be:

1. The greatest orchestral tubist of all time.
2. The greatest tuba soloist of all time.
3. The greatest jazz tubist of all time.

My votes:

1. Jake
2. Oystein
3. Tuba Fats

1. Can't say all time cuz I ain't been around since tuba was created. As for recorded and heard live, my vote goes to Chester Schmitz for orchestral tubist with John Fletcher in a VERY close second.
2. Soloist - Roger Bobo.
3. Jazz - Rich Matteson or Howard Johnson.

I was fortunate to catch Abe Torchinsky fairly often as a student coming up and who would not be suitably impressed?
As soloist, what Bobo did for the tuba is off the charts.
As a jazz tubist who always flew under the radar, I'd have to say Gene Mayl. I wore out more of his records [sadly] than I can even remember. I wish I had those recordings today! Especially " The Dixieland Rhythm Kings in Hi-Fi"---what a wonderful album and a great influence on my musical career. Anyone who has that one, I'd be eternally grateful for a copy!
Bearin' up!

Count my vote for these candidates, without hesitation.

Jacobs was the best orchestral tubist in the 50s, 60s, 70s, but by the 80s and beyond I think guys like Deck, Schmitz, Pokorny, etc surpass him for orchestral sound.

Don't see too many guys from overseas on here. Any non-Americans you guys like? I guess I'm particularly talking about the orchestral side.

Alexander von Puttkamer is pretty spectacular in Berlin.

I second for Puttkamer ! And I really like the playing of Stefan Ambrosius from the Bayerisches Staatsorchester. Very present and equal sound.
