HOLTON 105 ?

They are very nice horns, almost identical to the Holton 355 (and by association, the 345 a.k.a. Holton 99).



(It's interesting to note that the 345/99, with 4 valves, was $50 less expensive than the 355/105, with 3 valves and a recording bell.....)

Actually, I think you have a Holton "BB 350". Check the bell. Yours is identical to mine. Mine was made circa. 1967 according to the serial #. The 105 is the earlier version with the smaller ferrules, the later 350 has larger ferrules. IMO - Huge, beautiful sound, decent response for a 6/4, but funky intonation.

So, Holton 105 -> 350 .......like the King 1241 -> 2341.

I believe the BB350 has a "full-length" top 3rd valve slide, same as the 345, 340, 355, etc (as opposed to the "curly-cue" on his horn).

The catalogue picture I posted above sure looks an awful lot like the O.P. horn (and it says 105, too... )

340/345/350/355 all first valve tubing goes up.

The 105 has what is essentially a sousaphone style valve set up.

Not on mine. Clearly says "BB 350" on the recording bell, and has the curly-cue 3rd valve layout and the top-and-bottom slides for the first valve.

I can only think of 2 explanations for this:

1) the horn was built at a time of transition, where both models were manufactured simultaneously (the bells are interchangeable), and they sent a 105 out of the factory with a bell stamped "BB-350")

2) it's a detachable bell - it might not be original to the horn (most likely scenario, but unless you are the original owner, impossible to ascertain)

Is "BB-350" stamped on the receiver also? (Holton was known to do this with the 3xx models).

I have owned both a 105, and a 350, and the valve circuits were different as described above; the 350 had the model number "BB-350" stamped on the receiver, while the receiver on the 105 was blank.
