There may be differences in the cup and in the backbore.

However, the difference that is immediately visible is between the rim concepts.

The SM2 has a rounded rim with a not so sharp edge, whereas the DW2AL has the standard Denis Wick rim, which is quite flat and which has a sharper inner edge.

The 2AL is one of the few DW trombone mouthpieces that I don’t have. I like his rim concept, but I found his bass trombone mouthpieces too narrow, so I went with the Yeo signature model by Yamaha, which has the same rim concept. In fairness this was before the introduction of the DW 0AL, which I haven’t had the chance to try.

I have the SM2M, because that was the widest mouthpiece I could find with the old medium stem. Not to be used on a euphonium, but on a helicon shaped valved bass trombone in Eb as found in some German fanfare bands built around the valved cavalry trumpet in low (alto) Eb.
