Besson 995 CC Tuba

Post by TubaKyleH »

I was just wondering if anyone plays this horn and what they think about it. Good, Bad?

I have a student who just bought one. it is great. I love the way it plays. Only problem is a sluggish 5th valve, but for the price he got it for, we can get that worked on. If all of the horns come off the line like this one, its a good buy.

Besson 995 CC

I bought mine last November from Brasswind. It's on the bigger side for a 4/4, but is very nimble and has a great low register. For the price, you can't beat it.

[quote="codytuba"]I have heard great things about it, but, much like the PT 606 and every other Nirschel horn made, it's pretty hit and miss. quote]

You have played on a bad 606? I have played about 12 of them and they are all pretty much the same. Where did you encounter the "bad" one? I find it hard to believe that the 606 model should be called "hit or miss".

I haven't played on one personally, but have heard consistant reports that it doesn't suck! Doesn't Palafian play on it exclusively now? He and Pat are both on Bessons if memory serves...
I played Sam's and loved it. I assume it is a "good" one. You do need to have decently large hands though.

I've played a Besson 995 just a few weeks ago at GPRTEC. I tried it against the Miraphone 1291 and Meinl Weston 2155...IMO the Miraphone and Meinl Weston are better and the Meinl Weston is the best out of the three and it's cheaper than the 995.

Besson CC

Post by Mike Forbes »

I love the Besson 995...and I'm not saying that just because I got a free one as a Besson Artist. For Sotto Voce, it is the best horn I've come across for supporting the bottom of that group without obliterating it. I've used it in orchestras from time to time, but still prefer my York 6/4 Rusk-Cut CC for most of that work. I do, however, prefer the Besson for orchestral auditions...it successfully propelled me to the finals at Colorado last year, but we'll see what happens this summer! (Try, try again!). The 995 horns are rather different...as always: play before you pay.
