Is this a 38K?

Post by pjv »

I thought it was. Same configuration. But when I compaired it to my 40K, 20K & 32K (which all have the same boring), I noticed that the bore size on all the slides were just a little bit larger (not as large as my 36J, however). Did Conn work with variable sizes, or is this something else? It dates from the same period as my 40K: the 1920's.
The bell has this curious engraving. Wonder what this was all about.

Do you mean like the
Conn bore sizes at the Conn Loyalist?

...and thats the real point isn't it? Everything I've read about these sousaphones says that the 20K, 25K, 32K, 38K, and 40K all shared the same intestines (except for the short valves on the the 20K & 25K, and the extra valve on the 25K and 40K). And with the exception of the 32K, they should be the same tubing up to the bell ring.
So, why is this conn of mine a tad bigger? It looks the same as my 40K (-4th valve). The bells are interchangeble and (of coarse?) the necks. Its in the slides.
Unfortunatly this instrument is not marked.
Anyone know if Conn made anything larger in a bell front? How much larger?
