I thought you meant "that smell" of Old Shanghai you get when you open a new Chinese tuba.

Mine did anyway...

It's been airing out for months and the case still has it!!

If the case is foambody, the JP case will be from exactly the same factory (and have the same wheels) as the Wessex. I know because I toured the case factory only three weeks ago and saw JP cases being made beside those for Wessex.

The smell mentioned seems to be a thing of the past. New environmental and H&S regulations in China mean different glues are being used today.

I know I have said this before, but for people reading this thread who do not know - Most of the problems with Mark's Prague (finish, engraving, valves, etc.) have all been addressed since that tuba was manufactured - which was before Wessex started quarterly visits to the factory to raise the quality. There is no comparison in what is made today with what was made then. In fact very few, if any horns manufactured three years ago would pass current quality assurance checks - that is how much the quality (and our acceptability level) has raised. But don't take my word for it - just check out the horns we exhibit at various events in the next year, or visit the Michigan store.

Mark, I hope you enjoy your new JP - and see you at TMEA!

We have actually now discontinued the Prague and currently just have one (last year's stock) left in warehouse.

For cases, I am increasingly moving away from foambody cases for tubas to moulded latched cases

My offer remains to replace that contrabass trombone (with troublesome Hagmann style valves) with one of our new ones with regular rotary valves designed by Chuck Nickles when they come out next year. I am sure Chuck will personally quality assure each one of those at factory.

I see more Jinbao cases (from made ten years ago to one made year ago) that I care to.
Jinbao cases are not Wessex cases. Wessex are Wessex and not Jinbao - no more than JP are the XXX factory (we both know the name) where they are made.

speaking of smell,
I recently received a Wessex Cimbasso which I'm VERY happy with, and when I opened the case this absolutely lovely fragrance came out.
At first I couldn't place it but now I'm convinced; vanilla!

It certainly added to the "brand new instrument" euphoria.

Is this a really evil smell, as in Campaign to Ban Chemical-Emitting Smelly Plastic from China? It isn't new, but I see the 4th item on the list here is a violin case. Thankfully, my only suspected encounter has been sink stoppers, the kind that are combined with a strainer. The only stoppers I can find any more are Chinese, and when new they smell really awful. (When old, they work awful, and the interim period is pretty short.) I normally steer clear of Chinese products.
