Whoa!!! Snakes in my tuba??? Bad enough there are snakes on planes and coming out of toilets - but now my tuba??? That makes the residual effects of lamp oil to my health pale in comparison!!!

I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE monkey-fighting SNAKES IN MY Monday-to-Friday TUBA!!!

Oh, OK, got it. I had an engine in an older car that used 20W50 oil, but if I put anything lighter than that into it, it would use oil almost as fast as the gas. Rings were optional, I guess. Should have caught it: thick = heavy, thin = light. :headdesk:

I kept the MSDS for our work locations for a while, and there is an MSDS sheet on just about everything, and they are all scary. Some of the common household items like Windex, if you read the sheet would make you never want to clean you windows again. Keep in mind some of these products are sold in 55 gallon drums for industrial uses, so the MSDS sheet has to cover occurrences like if I spill a 55 gallon drum of this in an enclosed space what can happen, and what should I do about it. A few ounces of oil in your horn isn't going to cause a risk, unless you happen to have a severe sensitivity to it. Personally I make it a habit not to pull air through my horn when I breath, you are probably at more risk from rotting food, and the slime that accumulates in your horn over time than the oil. The petroleum based valve oil most of us have been using for years is basically the same stuff as lamp oil. In small quantities there should be no real risk.

Unless you are very sensitive to fumes and chemicals..and there are plenty of people out there.

For some that are more sensitive to chemicals everything will affect them. I have a very hard time with buying used mouthpieces for that matter because of even light amounts of polish residue will give me migraines and trigger asthma.

What valve oil you do recommend that is safe?

Slosh a whole BOTTLE of valve oil ($$$!) through your instrument every few days (being labeled "valve oil", it's going to be "safe" ) to avoid lime build-up.

If you are putting a bottle's worth of oil in every few days, what do you do with all of it when it comes out?

And how many instruments are receiving all this oil?

I have a friend who has identified an issue with the addative in Blue Juice valve oil. Go figure she's so sensitive to it that she can't sit next to a trumpet player who's using it on their instrument.

On the topic of synthetic, petroleum based or lamp oil etc for oiling your instrument I would like to share a few thoughts based on my personal experience. I have been playing tuba for over 45 years and have tried many oils mentioned. Due to the acidity in my saliva I tend to get a white sludge in my horn when using petroleum based oils. So I switched to so called synthetic oils (the usual brands) and was surprised that I was still getting white sludge. The ONLY synthetic oils that don’t react and with me are Yamaha and Resilience oils. So why is this? In speaking with Matt from Resilience I learned that Synthesized or Hydro cracked mineral oil is the standard for synthetic lubricants. They is not a true synthetic. However, both Resilience and Yamaha are true synthetic made of POAs. There is a good article on this on the Resilience site. Currently I only use Yamaha and Resilience. The others including the green and white brand are now used to oil squeaky door hinges.
