Wonky 3rd partial —> good “false” tones?

Basically the title.

My current horn has a G below the staff that tends about 20 cents high. Excellent false tones.

I owned a massive Hilton BBb with York branches and a Miraphone bell. F below the staff was about 25 cents high. Rock solid false tones.

Every Conn 2xJ I’ve played. Same story.

I’m thinking this was discussed quite a while back, but wondering who else has noticed the same. Are the York copies from China exhibiting similar characteristics?

Kings, Conn 12Js, and Tiger/CoolWind BBb tubas have very good false pedals, but I have not noticed sharp third partials on any of them.
What they do have in common is conical bore. Tubas with exponential bore such as the YBB 103/05 and their many imitations are not as heavy but have almost non-existent false pedal notes

2XJ Conns tend to be flat on the third partial F and 1-3 is the preferred fingering instead of open. I've never seen one that was sharp. I have seen a few that were dead-on in tune.

I've felt that the 3-valve 20J and 21J have better false tones than the 4-valve 24J and 25J. YMMV.

You’re likely right about the direction of the intonation issue on the Conn 2xJ. I can only recall them being off.
