Eastman Euohoniums

Post by bgozdowski »

Do any professional euphonium players here have experience with the Eastman euohoniums? Specifically the 526, compensating horn. I have a student interested in purchasing an instrument, but would like a more user-friendly price range.

Have you asked this over at David Werden's website forum? It's geared pretty much towards Euphoniums, and there probably already are some reviews there.

I've played a few, and found them to be OK horns. They're a bit on the expensive side of things, considering that you get pretty much the same package with a (now cheaper) Jupiter JEP-1120. The silver plate lasts about 3 years before it starts to wear, on the earlier ones. The valves move well, and slides are better finished in most cases than their baritone horn. Solders still can be a problem, as can threads on caps. But now onto the way they play: No intonation problems that were glaring to me, high register or low. The sound was, on average, a little deader than a Yamaha, more like a Jupiter in response and projection. Perfectly acceptable for someone moving up to their first real euph. The new hard case these come in is pretty decently protective, but doesn't have enough storage. They'll need a bag or something if they've got more than valve oil and slide grease in the case.
Any time at all is tuba time. Watch for the signs.
