Pocket is the way to go. Started him at 6 years old and he’s been playing for less than a year now, and no formal lessons either. He wants piccolo now:) Completely agree on Jinbao/Chinese instruments, they are perfect for kids and inexpensive used or even new.

I have begun thinking about that as my oldest grandchild is 6 yrs old. I gave him a pvc “bugle” with a Kelly mouthpiece a year or two ago so he could get started on the concept of brasswinds. (Darned if he didn’t break the mouthpiece! But I had another.) It might be time to up his game.

Older cornets are nearly as small as pocket trumpets and are cheaper and more sturdily built, in general. Many folk like Olds Ambassadors.

Don’t go to piccolo trumpet too quickly! They are little but not easy to play.

Regarding the 30” harmonica: I wish that I had gotten one of those really large (like 6-8 ft) classroom sized slide rules for my housing decor. There was a time the schools were throwing them away.

I had one of those demo slide rules in my classroom for many years after slide rules disappeared from school-supply stores, and occasionally would do a calculation on it just to amaze the kids. They found it fascinating.
