Brass trio suggestions

Post by Joe Baker »

I work with a VERY good (French) horn player -- first call guy backup for Knoxville Symphony. We've often thought it'd be fun to find a trumpet and play some trios. Well, I just found out that one of our newer employees PLAYS TRUMPET, so we'd like to get together and try some trios (I'll play trombone, until such time as we find a bone or euph player to join us).

One problem, though -- I don't really know how good the trumpet player is. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some easy/medium Trumpet-Horn-Trombone stuff as a starting point. A book of trios would be great, though suggestions of individual pieces would be welcomed too. Preferably something "accessible", as it would be fun to perform at some company functions for non-musicians and have them NOT spend the whole time looking at their watches.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Here's something to start with (you'll want to print the .TIF files):

http://memory.loc.gov:8081/music/sm/sm1881/02400/02492/

"6 Trios for Bb Cornet, Eb Alto and Baritone"

Some ready-to-read stuff might also be trios for clarinet, horn and bassoon/cello.

Probably the first thing I would do is go to http://www.bvdpress.com/ and click on Brass Trio. I've been purchasing a lot of stuff from Bryan lately. He's really good at answering email if you have questions about anything.
