Here's a video of the Berlin Brass Quintet in which I notice the tuba has a valve slide or two that are pulled rather LONG. (3:18) The player leaves them long throughout the performance. No constant pulling/pushing as is so commonly seen these days. What's up with that? Anyone else do this?

It's only out 2 - 3 inches on that M-W/Melton F tuba. I've found the 3rd slide circuit to be a bit short (sharp) on some M-W rotary contrabass tubas, needing to be out a couple inches or so. Not a big deal.

I've always wondered why some tuning slides are SO long, if they are never really intended to be pulled out anywhere near that far. I see it on trombones too, where they have an F-attachment that isn't long enough for an E pull, but still has a good 5 + inches of tuning slide. My bass trombone has a 6 inch tuning slide on the D crook.
