It's a mouthpiece truing tool. I find them very effective if you're VERY careful. As Barry suggests, take it to a professional, he'll be able to better fix it than your average HS player. It reminds me of a couple things to remember about mouthpiece care. Have a spare should a mishap like dropping this happen. And good info with any mouthpieces (mainly my Monettes) if it isn't in the horn it's in the case. Cleaning the mouthpiece happens once a week and in a place where if you drop it, it won't fall more than a few inches at most.

Enjoy.

Here's a rule of thumb I have with marching band. Use a mouthpiece that you won't lose sleep over if it's disfigured. Basically don't take your "concert" mouthpiece on the field. Buy something like a Kelly mouthpiece that's similar and cheap, or some sort of inexpensive stencil of the same mouthpiece from a local music store.

Kelly Mouthpieces' 51D-sized trombone/euph/bari mouthpiece. Lexan, just like their Kellyberg.

I don't think there are any of those around his neck-o'-the-woods.
They all pretty much drop out by 6th grade, huh?
