Miraphone 1293 5th valve bore

Post by CooperBayliff »

The Miraphone 1293 is suppised to have a bigger 5th valve than previous models but on the bore measurements listed on the miraphone website, it has the same bore as the previous models. Whats up with that?

You would probably have to ask Miraphone...have you reached out to them? My guess is that older Miraphone 1291's, 12092's and/or 1293's had a smaller bore 5th valve and the newer models now have a larger 5th valve. Whether or not this makes a great difference, as Miraphone implies in the description of the "new" 1293 on their website, you'd have to play some horns to decide...which is what people have been urging you to do. I think you can get lost in the minute details of various horns in an abstract discussion, but how a horn plays for you is the ultimate issue...that, and, as we've said, what your major professor/teacher/guru thinks. He wields the grading pencil and helps determine where you get in to do your Masters...

.835"

"Bore: 0.772/.835" (19.6/21.2mm)"

This quote comes from the Horn Guys website... "Recently a third option has appeared as the model 1293. This tuba has a new XL style fifth rotary valve which has more rounded ferrules into the rotor, and a more correctly dimensioned airway through the rotor as well. You can also see this new rotor on the Miraphone 98B Siegfried BBb. "

You can find this information pretty easily. Just do your research.

I know what the website says. Im stating the fact that the previous 129X models have the same bore measurements even though the 1293 is supposed to have a bigger bore

That's not what the description says...it says that the new 1293 had a bigger bore 5th than "previous models," but doesn't say which previous models it's referring to...my guess is that they're talking about older models of the 129X series, but that's just a guess.

All of this is just academic navel-gazing until you get to try out the horns...

If I recall correctly, it's the actual physical rotary valve itself -- not the bore -- that is larger on the 1293.

A friend had a 1293 and it was a great tuba.
