American tubists playing 3+1 Eb tuba

Post by AHynds »

Hello, all!

I had a random thought/question to ask: what professional American tuba players regularly perform on a 3+1 compensating Eb tuba as their main bass tuba? The three I can think of off the top of my head are Scott Watson, Kenneth Amis, and Rex Martin. I'm sure there are others, but I'm drawing a blank right now. I ask because I am really interested in the ways in which different playing schools mix and match over the years--the 3+1 Eb is such a quintessential British instrument, but it has definitely picked up some proponents around the world. It's kind of like how you can hear an American and British euphonium player back to back, and distinguish little bits of their playing and sound that distinguish them from one another. I just find it fascinating!

Edit: just thought of another, although with a caveat--Wes Jacobs played a Yamaha Eb, I believe.

Would you be kind enough to include 3+1 compensating F tuba players as well? I don't know if I count as professional, but I DO have a degree in tuba performance for what it's worth lol.

Phil Sinder plays a 983 - front action compensating. Marty Erickson plays a Wilson 5 valve. Neither are 3+1, but those are two of the best Eb players I have ever heard.

I think Michael Parker uses/ has used 3+1 eb’s.

Matt Murchison plays the snot out of his 981. He is a euph player by trade, but plays CC and Eb just as good as the best of them, so we should count him!

James Gourlay might count? I know he is not from the states but lives in Pennsylvania (and has for some time), and is known for playing Besson 98x horns.

Obviously Sheridan plays a 983. Again, not a 3+1 but counts for something.

Tucker Jolly (University of Akron) played a 3+1 eb. Probably a besson.

I’m pretty sure Nat McIntosh played a 3+1 eb, at least a little bit.

Did Tom Holtz play a 3+1 eb? I know he had a 983 at one point but I am not sure if he ever had a 3+1 eb.

The folks in River City Brass often use 3+1 eb’s.

This is just what I could come up with off the top of my head. Hope it helps!

It looks like Juliane Gralle might play a compensating Eb when she plays tuba. I was told by Steve from the Horn Guys she tried out the used Miraphone 283 they had before I snapped it up.

Bill Reichenbach plays an Eb when he does studio work on the tuba, but he is better known as a bass-trombonist.

Hello. If one extends the question to Canada, several Canadian orchestral players use/have used the Eb extensively.
