Denis Wick new shape

Post by Donn »

When my Denis Wick 2L arrived in the mail this week, a red sticker on the box warned "new updated outer shape", and indeed it's different.

In case this is news, it looks vaguely like a Bach Megatone but with a much shallower rim. (Used to look very vaguely like a Conn 2.)

Doesn't look to me like a triumph of esthetics over engineering. Anyone know what virtues the new shape is supposed to have?

Why the move away from the sharp inner rim? That's one of the things that I liked about the DW mouthpieces.

This is a plain 2L. I think the rounded rim etc. would have been a 2XL - one of the big mail-order houses shows a funny looking piece with a rounded rim, laying on its side next to a normal model, maybe that's an X.

The new updated outside shape doesn't seem to have any effect on the rim, if anything it's sharper and flatter than my 5, though probably just because of its larger size. I'm assuming that from the rim in, this is the same as any 2L - he'd kind of have to change the model number otherwise.

Heavier? Surprise, the 2L is lighter than my 5 - 216.5g, vs. 242 for the 5.

It's a nice enough mouthpiece. Fairly crisp 32mm rim of modest width, cup is somewhere between bowl and conical shape. I understand it to be a little like Conn 7B. Seems to be working out OK on my little F helicon, some edge on the sound but not as harsh as the C4 and more substantial below the staff (though not as potent down there as my new Kellyberg.)
