if it were me........
I would just have my valves vented and learn to pull slides. It's A LOT cheaper than adding a fifth valve. I use my 5th valve strictly as an "alternate fingering" valve for pitch purposes but feel it only prevents me from "having to" pull my slides as often. The only problem might be pedal Db on a CC tuba and Cb on a BBb. Sometimes you may have to pull a couple of slides or false tone to get those in tune. 99% of us learned tuba on a 3 or 4 valve tuba anyway. Some pros even use only 4 valves. I think Mike Moore's "main axe" Holton is 4 valves.

I'm just now, duh, figuring out what the very long, easily accessible 5th valve slide on my 182 F tuba is for. Gee. It's just that I'm so damn good at lipping pitches.bloke wrote:
Most folks who own a 4-valve Miraphone 186-4U-CC never figure out the "genius" of this particular tuba's 4th valve design:
- reasonably easily reachable by the left hand
- very l-o-n-g tuning range (c. 7" X 2 = 14" range) from very sharp to very flat, which allows
- low F tuba to be played in tune 1-2-4 with the 4th slide all the way in, and
- delivery of the chromatic scale - all the way down to "low D" with only "low Db" being not particularly feasable - with various other 4th valve slide positions.

Too bad about Bob Denver. Nobody said what he died of; we always want to know that, why don't they say?
