Floyd Cooley's F-tuba?

Post by Dave Y »

What F or Eb tubas has Floyd used over the years? I'm a huge fan of his, and have always wanted to know.

Thanks!

Maybe some other students should chime in here but I'll give it a try. Not sure what he won the SanFran gig on (yes, he only used F tuba for his audition) but I know he played a Gronitz rotary F(pretty old model that sold on Ebay recently) for a while. He still plays on a silver Alexander and a Yamaha 822 laquered. CC tuba wise, he's used a Holton, PT-6, and his own Nirschl York copy. Not exactly sure which F Tuba he used on his solo albums but I think the first one was the Gronitz and the other was the 822. Like I said before, maybe another student of his should chime in. I would dare to say his F tuba of choice is the Alexander. He seems to prefer the sound of a German rotary F Tuba. For mouthpieces, you guessed it, he uses his own line.
