Well, not that -- you mean they actually have gender-bender pills now? (and we thought the Viagra spam was bad ... ) :P

Before blaming yourself, check if anything happened to your tuba.

I remember this story of the trombone player from the student orchestra I played in when I was in college. We came back one time from a long and tiring summer tour playing 4+ concerts a day in the open air and/or weird places.

He started practicing again after a few days rest and noticed his playing was cr@^. No wonder, he thought, he'd spent 3 weeks playing and drinking way too much and not sleeping enough. So, he bravely soldiered on. Wait, maybe his trombone was dirty? So he rinsed it with warm soapy water, gave it a good oiling etc. etc. His playing didn't improve though, it only got worse and worse.

When the new college semester started he came to his teacher almost in tears, thinking he had ruined his embouchure or otherwise damaged something and would maybe start to think about quitting trombone. He played his first piece and indeed, it was rubbish. Then his teacher took up this guy's trombone and played on it. Rubbish. Only after complete disassembly and lots of searching of the instrument did they find a green furry clothes pin, used to keep the parts on the stand during the tour, stuck firmly half way the tuning slide...

I was thinking the same thing.

I was wondering if it might be the tuba. I find that my intonation, responsiveness and overall sound change a lot based on when I last emptied the water key. It's a simple thing, but it has a huge affect on sound. Long before I get the burble, I get weak high notes, lack of punch etc.

Check to see if your water key is sealed. An air leak can have the same effect as what you describe. Is the mouthpiece in tight? Are there small people in your home who may have tossed something into the bell?
