tuba family of instruments

Post by daktx2 »

many other instruments have complete families covering just about anything you'd normally play. for example, the clarinet family covers everything from BBb contrabass to Bb soprano and even higher. is there an instrument in the tuba family for each voice? i know of contrabass (BBb or CC), bass (Eb or F), tenor (euphonium), and alto (Eb alto horn), but what fills the soprano voice? flugelhorn? cornet? one of those antique saxhorn thingys? thanks for the help.

Flugelhorn would be the one. All of these instruments are part of the valved bugle family. Get yourself a copy of "The Tuba Family" 2nd ed. by Clifford Bevan. It's well worth it for anyone interested in tubas and their history:
