Mark Carter, a/k/a http://www.mrtuba.com
Period. Full stop. The best. End of discussion.

He has a line of tubas with his own name made by Melton: a BBb comp and an EEb comp for Band, and a rotory CC and EEb for orchestra/general purpose.

You can read reviews about them at our neighbors, TubaNews.

The guy at Rosehill (in Buckinghamshire?) Just WNW of London outside the M25 did a nice job on my band horn.

Repairs in the UK

Post by Locky »

My suggestion before you do anything else is to have a word with Adrian Jarvis at Rosehill Instruments at Beaconsfield. First rate technician and tuba player. Better still in my view he is a really decent chap and honest. Hop and a skip from Kent. Adrian put an original John Fletcher lead pipe on my Besson 982. Give him my regards for he will know who I am.

Matt - as with anything in this life, in my experience anyway, you get what you pay for. I have been impressed with the ability to establish a professional 'relationship' with Rosehill, and Adrian in particular. I felt well treated price wise but I was not in the major overhaul market which almost certainly in part requires contracting out. Again I would say get on the dog and bone or go see him. E mail me if you wish/can from this site. I am a newcomer at least post wise!

Whilst I fully endorse Adrian's work at Rosehill, you have an excellent set up close by in Sharon Mc.Callum at Bones & Bugles;

Nobody has mentioned Derek Farnell in Crumpshall, Manchester!?

If you just wanted a regular overhaul then most guys mentioned will get decent results I expect.
For Tuba-specific custom work I'd definately consider Mark Carter (S. Wales), Derek Farnell (Manchester), or of course Mike Johnson (Bolton) who posts here and does some incredible custom work (but not so much overhauling...).

What folks maybe don't realise (and I'm no expert) is that quite a bit of work gets passed around by some repair guys; particularly Tuba work.
Often to McQueens for general overhaul or ANY silverplating of tubas, or to Mr Farnell's for anything very technical.

If you're getting a bunch of tubas done then you'll be spending a few £££ so it's worth getting the instruments into the hands of someone you respect and trust!! Manchester is well under 250 miles from Kent.
