Hey now, I resemble that remark. I could get by shaving every opther day while I was on active duty.

Even now, I cannot grow a beard, too many gaps. The mustache just looks wrong. Sideburns are a no go as well.

And it takes forever. At 30+ I can still go 2 days before I appear to have the "5 O'Clock shadow" look.

More than a day after shaving and I cannot play well at all.

I didn't try until I was in my 30's for the same reason; thought there were light spots that would just look bald. Then I just didn't shave for a week (I forget why), but after a day or two the bald patches started to come in (they were just slow starters... ). Made me wish I'd tried long before...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Apparently newly shaved facial hair has the tensile strength of copper wire. Over time increased length makes it feel smoother and thus easier to play.

As a beard and moustache wearer since the age of 18, I have never noticed any detrimental effects.
Composers shouldn't think too much -- it interferes with their plagiarism.
