Great point.. however the issue is mainly a monetary onesloan wrote:It seems reasonable to me that if you have run out of concertos to prepare for the contrabass tuba it's long past time for you to acquire a bass tuba.

I don't know if it bothers you that the work isn't written for the tuba, but the Grøndahl Concerto for Trombone (played an octave lower) came off very well on my CC last year. I can't imagine it being too much of a problem on BBb.

Not at all.. I wouldn't mind playing solos that are written for other instruments.fenne1ca wrote:I don't know if it bothers you that the work isn't written for the tuba, but the Grøndahl Concerto for Trombone (played an octave lower) came off very well on my CC last year. Re: Looking for the right Concerto
It's a famous tenor trombone concerto that would, IMO, sound pretty bad down an octave. Too many thirds too low in the tuba range. Mud city, particularly the second movement.Troy wrote:Not at all.. I like the Wilhelm Concertino for tuba. I can play it on my BBb I'm sure you could too
And I think its written for contrabass tuba too!

The Frackenpohl Concertino written for Abe Torchinsky (sp?) is a fine little work well suited for contrabass tuba. The second movement is quite pretty.
It's also a good work if you're playing a concerto with a less than professional orchestra.

Eric Ewazen's "Concerto for Bass Trombone or Tuba" would work well

Re: Looking for the right Concerto
Take a look at the Concerto for tuba by Robert Jager. The piece has some good challenges and I spent about 6 months on it as a freshman in college. At the time I was still playing BBb and this worked very well as it really has some challenges with range, technique and rhythm, or at least it was challenging to me as a freshman in college. During my sophomore year I won two concerto competitions using this piece.
Otherr pieces to consider are the Gregson, Lebedev, Frackenpohl and V.Williams. Don’t let the key of the horn determine what to play or learn. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to learn the whole piece at once, you can learn one mvt at time and perform them accordingly.
Good luck,
