Re: New tuba mouthpiece
I think these 4 mouthpieces work reasonably well for St. Pete tubas:

Re: New tuba mouthpiece
Practice.
There are several good "all around" mouthpieces, which some of us would argue for 1,200 days. But a Conn Helleberg (or copy), a Bach 18, or a Miraphone C4 are all decent mouthpieces which are good starting points (I don't like the 24AW - too teeny, but others disagree, as will people with my C4 assertion)
But find something made in large numbers which will keep the cost down and show that it's a well regarded, oft-used mouthpiece. The, sorry, you'll have to practice. No substitute. When your high range feels like you want it to, then go on the mouthpiece market and and find what gets the sound you want up there... and down there.
Find a comfortable, popular mouthpiece, and hit the woodshed.

Re: New tuba mouthpiece
Funnel? Bowl? I have never seen a St Pete in person, but it doesn't matter, right - similar enough to 4/4 rotaries made by Miraphone, Cerveny and others? Slight preference for bowl, am I right?

I'd agree with that.Donn wrote:Funnel? Bowl? I have never seen a St Pete in person, but it doesn't matter, right - similar enough to 4/4 rotaries made by Miraphone, Cerveny and others? Slight preference for bowl, am I right?

Re: New tuba mouthpiece
While I agree the St. Petersburg is very different... I still personally prefer a deap bowl for it.

Re: New tuba mouthpiece
All right! So, on the second page, and the sixth day, maybe we have another answer (besides LM 12!)
How about a Laskey 28G? hornguys' favorite Laskey for the 186, by the way. Ordinary width ("28" == 1.28 diameter), deep bowl ("G" - though really don't have any idea how deep.)

Seriously, bloke....the kid is looking for advice. Can't you be helpful once in your life?
Nothing wrong with the 24AW. Like any other mouthpiece, it's not for everyone. Especially bloke. Although, I have been promised evidence that he uses one daily, with some special customizations. I'll post pics when I get the proof.

Re: New tuba mouthpiece
But cleaning out that particular 24AW should be easier............
Alan, where are you located? Best bet may be to get to a store that stocks different mouthpieces and will let you try them.

Not a 24AW, rather a 24WC. Not gonna be flush with my lips.
